General: Guidance for Recycled Roads Issued SEPA: Green Law Updates

The Waste & Resources Action Programme(WRAP) has published "Recycled Roads", a step-by-step guide to increasing the use of recycled content and improving materials resource efficiency in highways maintenance and construction. The guide has been widely endorsed by representative bodies working in the sector.

General: New discussion on unresolved WEEE areas General: Safe Transportation Advice

The DTI appear to be about to issue discussion papers to shed light on several key, unresolved areas within the new producer responsibility regulations for waste electronics. The papers are expected to be issued in the next few weeks, to help improve the chances of success of a full consultation expected in April or May.

The HSE has published guidance for safe transportation in the waste and recycling facilities.

WEEE: Germany brings WEEE producer responsibility into force

Paper: pressure on paper market

German householders will be able to take back waste electronic and electronic equipment to local collection points free of charge from March 24. The German government has said it is now ready for producer responsibility to start this month, bringing into force the terms of Europe's WEEE Directive.

Marginally weaker export prices for used cardboard (Old KLS) and continuing price pressure on office grade material are the two main features of the current recovered paper market.

General: Residents hit out over cut in waste collections WEEE: Kerbside WEEE collection?
Residents in some of Glasgow's suburbs are hitting out over moves to cut rubbish collections to once a fortnight. Although other councils, have introduced fortnightly refuse collections, the  residents in Bearsden, Milngavie and Lenzie are livid that not enough recycling bins were provided and little warning given.

A research project looking into the collection, recovery and recycling of electronic waste in Hampshire has suggested regular kerbside collections of WEEE is a possibility.

HSE: Nine waste industry deaths in eight weeks Batteries: Recycling Trial

The Health and Safety Executive has issued a safety alert to the waste industry after nine deaths were reported in eight weeks in late 2005 and early 2006.

Britain will attempt to turn around a poor record on recycling used batteries, with the country's biggest household battery recycling trial to take off this month

According to a survey of industry experts, the UK is unlikely to meet the EU diversion of waste from landfill targets.

Paper traded from £8.50 down to £8.25 in good volume, down 25p from last week's close.

Plastic traded at £27.50 in good volume, down £1.00 from last week's close.

Wood traded at £9.50 in modest volume, unchanged from last week's close.

Steel traded at £100.00 in modest volume, down £10.00 from last week's close.

Aluminium traded at £150.00 in modest volume, unchanged from last week's close.

Glass traded at £26.00 in light volume, up £1.00 from last week's close.
