General: Keep Scotland Beautiful Chief awarded OBE RAGS : AGM Minutes

Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, John Summers was awarded on the 31st December 2005 an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's New Years Honours List for services to the Environment:

"Throughout my working life of 40 years in local government and the charity sector I have been involved in trying to improve the quality of local environments and there has never been a time when it has been more important that these issues are confronted, tackled and addressed. A sustainable future for Scotland depends on the actions we take now on tackling global warming, waste management, energy conservation, marine pollution, sustainable transport and environmental education."

General: Isle of Lewis - Integrated Waste Site Starts to Take Shape
Packaging:Less waste research

The £10 million integrated waste management site been established on the Isle of Lewis has started to take shape. The site will be home to one of the few major anaerobic digestion plants currently being developed in the UK and the equipment should be arriving by the end of the month.

 

H J Heinz, Northern Foods, Geest Mariner Foods and International Food Partners (IFP) have been granted funds by WRAP to develop less wasteful packaging.

General: Renewable's Obligation Order 2006

HSE: Kerbside Recycling

The DTI has announced it decision on the final changes to the Renewables Obligation Order 2006. The draft order also includes the proposed changes, which will be introduced in Scotland and Northern Ireland to come into force from 1 April 2006.

The Health and Safety Executive is looking into the safety aspects of different types kerbside recycling containers.

WRAP: Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund Applications RAGS Member : Change at Novelis

WRAP are now looking for new applications for its Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund. The programme which was launched in 2004 is now opened to any organisation with an innovative idea that will significantly reduce packaging or food waste from the home, but the project needs to involve a retailer or major brand as this will maximise the chance a successful innovation will be widely adopted.

Andy Doran, the former chair of LARAC, is leaving DEFRA to become the new national manager for Novelis, the largest aluminium recycling company in the UK.

Rest of UK : Waste Strategy 2006 General : Raid on illegal site

In the next few  weeks the draft consultation for the Waste Strategy for 2006 will be released it was  announced at DEFRA Packaging Conference on Tuesday 17th January in London. DEFRA’s director of Environment Quality and Waste, Neil Thornton, said the Strategy would seek better connections between the management municipal and non-municipal waste.  It was also revealed on the same day through the BBC that the strategy also suggests the proportion of burned waste could rise from 9% to 25% in the next 15 years.

Biofuel: First Grain Bioethonal Plant in the UK

The first grain bio-ethanol plant in the UK has been granted planning permission in Henstridge by South Somerset District Council. The plant will produce bio-ethanol, which will be blended with petrol for use as fuel for cars and contribute towards the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (a requirement for all road fuel to contain 5% bio-fuel by 2010).

PRN: New protocol against plastic recycling fraud
Lord Bach of Butterworth launched WRAP's voluntary protocol for the Verification of Plastic Packaging Recycling in the UK. The protocol was conceived after allegations of fraud within the producer responsibility system for packaging waste, resulting in over estimation of reprocessing and exports.

Paper: Ecco plans for a new mill

Ecco Newsprint UK has put a planning application in for the construction of a paper mill near Redcar in the North East of England, which will produce 100% recycled newsprint. If the planning is granted this will be the first newsprint mill to be built in the UK for ten years.
