General: BBC "Real Story" - are you legal? RAGS : Annual General Meeting

Are you sure all your recyclables are being exported legally? On Monday the 5th December the BBC Real Story programme suggested that recyclable material collected from the Kerbside was ending up in landfills in China and Indonesia.

Following this programme, WRAP has moved to urge householders to continue recycling (click here for their statement), whilst the the Environment Agency is urging all local authorities to check their recyclables exports as it has confirms it is investigating investigating 11 cases involving the alleged illegal export of waste......

The RAGS AGM was held on the 14 December 2005 at The Tolbooth in Stirling. Minutes of the meeting will be posted on the RAGS website in due course. Members present voted to retain the current board of directors and for RAGS to continue with it current operations.
WEEE: Delay in implementation of WEEE regulations

Energy minister Malcolm Wicks confirmed on Thursday 15th December that the implementation of Europe's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive is to be delayed. They will be issuing a fourth consultation on the adoption of the Europe's WEEE Directive into UK law later in 2006. (click here for the DTi story) . The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) has expressed its disappointment at the further delay.

The European Commission is to adopted a detailed action plan designed to increase the use of energy from forestry, agriculture and waste materials. A sustainable development strategy for Scotland has been published.

Europe: UK Lagging behind Europe in diverting waste from landfill General: Edinburgh Garden Waste

Following the news in the last RAGS e-bulletin that the recycling rates in Scotland are on target, A new report produced from CIWM reveals that the UK is lagging behind the rest of the European countries - with the exception of Ireland and Spain!

.The recycling of garden waste in Edinburgh has almost doubled this year, as the city continues to progress towards Scotland's recycling target of 25% in 2006.

WEEE: Scottish WEEE Capability Report General: Standardised Signage

Scottish Enterprise has published an assessment of Scotland's Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling and reuse capabilities.

The Scottish Executive have awarded £500,000 funding to be managed by SWAG to help in encouraging the use of Recycling Centers and Points through the standardisation of signage.

  • A Skip hire company has been fined £2500 for illegally dumping waste.

Enviroglass (part of the Shetland Amenity Trust) have re-launched their fully comprehensive web site. They recycle in the region of 500tpa of Shetland's glass!

 

PRN: Market set for Turbulent Month

SEPA: National Waste Strategy

The market for packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) is set for a potentially turbulent month, as traders enter the "carry over" period at the end of the compliance year, where the can be issued by accredited reprocessors as 2005 or 2006 notes.

Wood traded between £10.00 and £13.00 in small volumes, closing at £10.00, down £2.00 from last week's close.


Paper traded between £7.25 and £10.25 in good volume, closing at £7.25, down £3.00 from last week's close


Plastic traded from £32.00 to £34.00 in good volume, closing at £34.00 up £1.50 from last week's close.


Glass traded from £10.00 down to £9.00 in good volume, down £1.00 from last week's close.


Steel traded between £180.00 and £170.00 in good volume, closing at £170.00, down £10.00 from last week's close.


Recovery traded at £2.75 in fair volume, closing at £2.75, unchanged from last week's close.

Paper: Recycle your Christmas Cards!

The Woodland Trust Scotland has announced its 2006 Christmas Card Recycling Scheme. The organisation is urging the people of Scotland to recycle their Christmas cards and help save woods and trees.

Metal: Aluminium helping grow trees in West Africa

RAGS member Alupro is working with Tree Aid, a Bristol-based charity, to grow trees in Burkino Faso, West Africa. Every tonne of Aluminium collected for recycling in the UK pays for one tree to be planted in Africa.

Glass: Broken bottles on the M3.... recycled glass sand in highways use

Day Aggregates will be supplying the equivalent of 20 million green bottles in recycled glass. The 10,000 tonnes of 100% recycled glass sand will be used by the Highway Agency on the M3.
