Welcome to RAGS - Recycling Advisory Group Scotland

Good News! The last quartely results from the Landfill allowance quarterly monitoring scheme (July - Sept 2005) show that 25.1% of MSW was recycled. However, the 12 month rolling average (Oct 04 - Sept 05) is still only at 21%.....

"In 2002, Scotland's energy was fuelled directly by gas and oil and also using electricity, generated predominantly from nuclear fuel and coal, with a lesser contribution from gas. The main demand was in the domestic sector, as energy was for space and water heating in homes, then for transport, especially road transport: these two sectors use over 60% of Scotland's delivered energy. The proposed study will involve the Scottish Executive, the Scottish
Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and Local Authorities and will result in a joint report for the Accounts Commission and Auditor General for Scotland. It will examine the performance of Local Authorities, SEPA and the Scottish Executive in reducing the amount of municipal waste1 being disposed of as landfill2, including the impact and value for money achieved by the investment in this

Implementation of WEEE Directive delayed

The DTI has announced a review of proposals for implementing the WEEE directive in the UK. The DTi has previously announced that DTI would meet Local Authority "New Burdens"* costs in the light of Ministerial decisions to defer the WEEE implementation .


* Specifically, costs to Local Authorities of arranging the treatments required for any televisions and PC monitors containing cathode ray tubes and fluorescent lamps which they collect separately.

Packaging recycling targets announced   (23rd Nov 2005)

The Scottish Executive, Defra and the Welsh Assembly have today announced new targets for the recycling of packaging waste in each year from 2006 until 2010.

Progress towards recycling targets  (17th Nov 2005)

New figures published today show Scotland is on course to meet its recycling target, the Parliament heard today.  Ross Finnie announced " We are making good progress towards our 2006 target of 25% but we cannot rest on our laurels"
